Modern security systems use contactless Prox Cards; prox is short for proximity. Depending on the type of reader used, you simply hold the card within 2-24" of the reader and beep - you're in! The most common readers have a short range of 1-2 inches, but it's not uncommon to find the longer range readers in use at high traffic areas to save time.
Software enables managers to control who has access to which doors (or gates) and to run sophisticated reports showing who went through each door within a specific time period. They can even track the wherabouts of a specific user by where their card was last used!
Prox Cards come in different sizes and shapes. From thin, printable cards, to hard plastic "proxkeys" that fit on a keyring, there is also a thin adhesive "proxpatch" which can be stuck on literally any surface!
In addition to controlling doors or gates, the readers can be interfaced to virtually any device needing to be securely controlled. They can even arm and disarm your security system!
