Motion Detection - Detects an intruder no matter how he gets in!

The title says it all. Motion sensors are one of the mainstays of all security systems, because they have the advantage of detecting an intruder regardless of how entry is gained. They can either be your primary sensing devices, or in a well-designed system they are a back-up in case a bad guy gets past your perimeter protection.

Today's motion sensors have come a long way. When first introduced over twenty years ago, the early units tended to false alarm a lot, but new technologies such as passive infrared and dual technology are much better at detecting intruders and not false triggering. They are now a reliable and highly respected security technology used in almost every system.

Motion sensors protect both directly and indirectly, this is their real value. Say you have a sensor installed at the end of your hallway. It directly protects the hall, meaning that if an intruder is in the hall he/she is detected. The cool thing is that the bedrooms opening into the hall are indirectly protected. Yes, an intruder an enter one of these rooms undetected, but as soon as they step in the hall they are caught! One sensor can protect many rooms directly and indirectly, making this the most cost-effective form of protection available.

One more thing I get asked a lot is how do you walk around your house without setting them off? Security systems usually include Home, Sleep, and Away modes. When in the Sleep mode, portions of the sensors in the bedroom area disarmed so you don't cause an alarm. The Home mode typically arms only the perimeter of your home. This is all programmable and easily customized to suit your needs.
