Don't Buy Security Over the Phone!

There are many well-known companies that sell home security systems by phone. You respond to a newspaper ad for a "free" system, and when you call in a nice person discusses how many windows and doors you have. They then price a system for your approval without ever setting foot in your house; in some cases they even mail you the system and you try to install it yourself! This doesn't make any sense to me.

If I were buying an air conditioner, I'd expect the company I am dealing with to come out and look at my house and see what I need. I would not know what to look for and tell them over the phone, because I am not an expert. It is not a TV or an appliance, but rather something that becomes part of my home. I do not believe I could install central air, and I know that most customers would have difficulty installing our electronic security systems as well.

Security systems require a personal design touch. When I do a security survey, I look for dozens of things, and often notice something new which I have not seen before. I take into account whether or not the premises is physically secure and where the weaknesses are to determine the best electronic protection package I can offer. This would never happen over the phone. Because of my observations, the security design is a good "fit" for the home and homeowner, and professional installation makes it painless for them as well.
