Monitored Smoke Detectors

The term "Monitored Smoke Detector" simply means a smoke detector which is part of an alarm system which is monitored by an alarm company. In plain English, when smoke is detected an alarm sounds and the monitoring company notifies the fire department. These provide a higher level of fire protection than standard Smoke Alarms which are purchased at a hardware store.

In a residence, these are not a code requirement but are an excellent idea for your family's safety. Typically they are an addition to a home security system, and they provide a lot of peace of mind. By providing early detection of a fire and notifying the fire department, lives can be saved and property damage minimized. At a minimum the detectors should be located outside each bedroom area and at least one on each floor, for best protection more are usually required.

In a business, monitored smoke detectors also enhance life safety and property protection. Often required by insurance companies or local authorities (depending on the type of business), these smoke detectors are part of a commercial fire alarm system.

Whether you have monitored smoke detectors or simple smoke alarms, be sure they are in good working order and (if applicable) the batteries changed, because the number one cause of death from fire is smoke inhalation! Early warning saves lives.
